Carnies (2010)

Our fiends over at Dread Central have a head's up on a cool flick coming our way called Carnies.

The flick is getting a limited theatrical release at the "Week of Terror" at the Bluelight Cinemas in Cupertino, California, and the plan is to have some showings in San Francisco and (possibly) L.A. The DVD will be out October 12th.

Here's the official synopsis:
Carnies follows a traveling sideshow in 1936, when the workers set up their oddities and illusions in another town hit by the Dust Bowl. However, this town is different, as a sinister force begins to kill off the carnies one-by-one. Detective Ellison (Reggie Bannister of ‘Phantasm’) is put on the case and looks at several of the carnies, including the mysterious carnival owner, Helen (Denise Gosset); the strong man, Virgil (Chris Staviski of ‘Zombie Hunter’); and Ratty, the snake handler (Doug Jones of ‘Hellboy’ and ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’).

Addams Family update

As first mentioned in this post, a brand new animated take on Charles Addams' creepy, kooky and classic cartoon family is coming our way, and Tim Burton's name was attached.

Well, producre Christopher Meledandri recently updated ComingSoon.net and said that the project is indeed moving forward, and that they hope Burton will still direct.

The current plans are for the film to be stop motion (not computer animation) and that it will be faithful to Addams' original comics. One cool tidbit is that they are still toying with the idea of doing the flick in black and white. I says go for it!

Del Toro's Frankenstein (201?)

I know I had talked about this project on a very early ep of Hauntcast, and there hasn't been too much news lately. However, here's some news from BD and DC.

When asked about the project, del Toro has said that Doug Jones has been cast as the Monster. As far as the script:

"I'm presenting the storyline to Universal ... but I think that I wanna be if possible shooting in May next year...So I need something that's ready to go into pre-production immediately. We're doing tests ... we did all the sculpting already. He's completely done, the body, the face, all the parts, including the nuts, which are something to behold. But we are doing a test with Doug very soon."

Mega Python vs. Gatoroid - Debbie Gibson & Tiffany

File this one under "Oh my!"

Debbie Gibson and Tiffany will star in an all new Scfy Saturday night original flick called "Mega Python vs. Gatoroid."

Gibson will play a "fanatical animal-rights activist who frees illegally imported exotic snakes from pet stores, sending them into the Everglades, where they grow to mega sizes." Meanwhile, Tiffany will play an "overzealous park ranger who uses dangerous methods to save endangered alligators."

Shooting starts this month and this schlock-fest will air in 2011!!

The Colonial Theatre's Spooktacular: Son of Godzilla/Keene, NH/July 31 at 2:00 p.m.

Yo, gang! I wanted to share some really cool news about an upcoming event at the Colonial Theatre in Keene, NH for any of our New England haunters and horror fiends.

From an email from Mark Nelson, the curator for the ongoing Colonial Theatre Spooktacular film screenings:

These events are held twice a year (one in the spring and one in October), and are co-presented by the historic Colonial Theatre and SATURDAY FRIGHT SPECIAL (NH's first home-grown horror host TV show, seen on public access stations from coast to coast). We run retro monster movies in 35mm on the Colonial's Kong-sized screen, along with vintage monster movie previews, snack bar ads, cartoons, and other fun bits of film, hosted by SATURDAY FRIGHT SPECIAL'S loveable lycanthrope Scarewolf. We also give away DVDs, T-shirts, and comic books to lucky patrons, and everyone has a blast. In the past we've run THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES, KING KONG VS. GODZILLA, and BRIDES OF DRACULA (which you were kind enough to mention on your blog last year). We try to present lesser-screened classic films that will get the fans excited, while also having enough appeal for general audiences. So far we've had really good turn-outs, and enthusiastic fans have returned again and again to our screenings.
On Saturday, July 31st we'll present the 1967 Toho tale of fatherly love, SON OF GODZILLA. Horror comics icon S.R. Bissette (SWAMP THING, TYRANT, TABOO) will be donating an original Godzilla sketch he's done for the event, as well as signed copies of a new comic that he'll be debuting at our screening. Bissette has been a big supporter of the Spooktaculars, and never fails to come through with some super-cool items for us to give away. He'll also be holding a comic signing at Comic Boom in Keene, just up the block from the theater, at a time (still TBA) on the day of the screening.
When the Colonial first approached me about doing a matinee Spooktacular (up to now we've done normal 7PM shows) as a finale for their summertime Family Film Series I jumped at the chance, as Saturday afternoon was the time that I first fell in love with monster movies (Toho in particular) via Boston's CREATURE DOUBLE FEATURE on WLVI in the late 70s/early 80s. To be able to present a Godzilla film at that same time of day, and in fact give fans a film that never played theaters back then (it was released directly to TV in the US) made me a little giddy. At our last Toho screening (KING KONG VS. GODZILLA) we had a line literally out the door and around the block, with lots of parents who grew up with Godzilla bringing their kids, so I hope we can again unite the generations with the love of giant monsters smashing things.

The Colonial Theatre Presents Its Fourth SPOOKTACULAR
Featuring A Rare 35mm Screening of Toho's SON OF GODZILLA
KEENE, NH – July 1, 2010: Giant monsters once again return to Keene NH at The Colonial Theatre's SPOOKTACULAR, Saturday, July 31st 2010 at 2PM. Curated by Saturday Fright Special, New Hampshire's first home-grown horror host TV show, the event features a rare 35mm screening of the 1967 Japanese monster melee SON OF GODZILLA. In addition to the main feature, vintage monster movie previews, a cartoon, and snack bar ads will precede the film, along with prize giveaways and on-stage appearances by Scarewolf and other Saturday Fright Special characters. The event will be the finale of the Colonial's annual Family Film Series, and will be an all-ages event, bringing back the feel of an old-time kiddie matinee.
"We're thrilled to be able to present a Godzilla film to the Colonial audience on a Saturday afternoon, the same way that so many kids in the 70s first saw these films, both in the theater and on TV," said Mark Nelson, SATURDAY FRIGHT SPECIAL curator for the event. "In fact, we're giving fans an opportunity they never had back then to see SON OF GODZILLA on the big screen, as the film was released directly to television in the US."
The film tells the touching tale of the bond between a father and son (who just happen to be 30-story giant lizards), and what happens when giant insects come between them.
The SPOOKTACULAR will also feature prize giveaways including an original Godzilla sketch from renowned artist S.R. Bissette, as well as signed copies of a new Bissette comic that will premiere at the event. The costumed cast from Saturday Fright Special will be on hand to introduce the film and mingle with the public.
This will be the fourth Spooktacular presented by the Colonial Theatre, an event previously held in the evening. "We were looking at our Family Film Series schedule, and realized that the all-ages audience for past Spooktaculars would make it an ideal way to cap off our summer matinee series," said Jessica Reeves, Director of Audience Services and Marketing for The Colonial Theatre. "We noticed a large number of parents bringing their children to our previous evening Spooktacular events, and realized that a daytime show would better serve those young and old who have a hard time staying up past a certain hour," she laughed, "It's hard to compete with the Sandman."

IT!: The Terror From Beyond Space - comic book

IDW Publishing just announced that IT!: The Terror From Beyond Space is comic to us in comic book form this July. The publisher hopes this will kick off its brand new "MGM Drive-In Theater" line of comics, with two more classic flicks getting a comic book reinterpretation.

This four-ish mini is written by Dara Naraghi with art by Mark Dos Santos. The writer has said that the storytelling will be "very straight forward," but also at the same time "a bit more modern." As far as the art, it has been described as "a clean art style," with "traditional page layouts and panels, expository caption boxes and old-school thought balloons. But the story, and especially the characters, were updated to appeal to more modern sensibilities."

Look for this in your LCS in a few weeks!

Carter Beats The Devil

The Wrap is reporting that Warner Bros. Pictures has resurrected its plan to film "Carter Beats the Devil." Michael Gilio will adapt, while Jon Shestack will produce.

If you haven't read it, Glen David Gold's novel is a fictionalised biography of 20's real-life magician Carter the Great. The magician finds himself in the middle of a strange mystery, and the story even manages to weave in real life personalities as characters.

As a huge fan of stage magicians and their history, I greatly enjoyed the novel a few years back. Again, strongly recommended and fun reading!

If done right, I think this would be a great and fun film. Hopefully, more details to follow!

The Funhouse Retrospective: An Interview With Tobe Hooper

STYD has a nice interview/retrospective with Tobe Hooper regarding his 1981 film The Funhouse.

The film has its critics, but I still enjoy the scary carnival setting and bizarre characters that hunt our hapless heroine throughout the darkhouse ride. If you haven't seen it, well shame on you! LOL - go check it out right now. It stands up as one of his better fright flicks.

Rumor was that Eli Roth was producing a remake of the film, but there hasn't been much heat on that story in a while.

Elvira returns to the scarewaves!

That's right, boils and ghouls, Elvira a/k/a Cassandra Peterson is returning to haunt the scarewaves with the all new "Movie Macbre."

Ghost Ship at Morey's Piers - Wildwood, NJ

Growing up, going down the shore always meant a fun week in Wildwood. Yeah, the ocean was fun and swimming was cool - but man oh man, the Boardwalk was where it was at! The people, lights, food, sounds, and the rides. The rides were so kick-ass! Of course, the highlight of the week was the gone but not forgotten Dracula's Castle. R.I.P.

Looks like monster kids of all ages now have a great reason to head to Morey's Piers - the opening of their brand spanking new haunted attraction called Ghost Ship.

I had posted about this on HF but never did pimp it on da blog - so, here it is!

The Halloween Horror Nights 2010/Universal Studios Hollywood

The Halloween Horror Nights 2010 event at Universal Studios Hollywood will expand in 2010, growing to 17 nights from September 24th through Halloween night.

Groovy new stuff includes the new King Kong 360 3D ride, five mazes, six "scare zones" and a new "Terror Tram" experience.

The sculpture, called "Silver Streak," is by acclaimed artist David Mach and is on display in London at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the world's largest open-submission contemporary art show with 1,267 exhibits selected from more than 11,000 entries.

The enormous sculpture -- valued at nearly $400,000 -- was made from 3,000 coat hangers that the Scottish-born Mach welded together after buying in bulk.

Your Guide to 70's Horror Films

This is a terrific website and resource for all things 70s horror. Definitelty check it out if you are interested in that time period, or if you are searching for an old flick you caught waaaaaaaaay back as a kid on the late late horror show but can't remember the title.

Nightmares in Red White and Blue

Gravitas Ventures has acquired the Video-on-Demand rights for Nightmares in Red White and Blue. Beginning on July 1, the documentary will be available across North America through Warner Bros. Digital Distribution. Links for iTunes and Amazon will be posted here.

Lorber Films has acquired all theatrical and DVD rights in the U.S. and Canada for Nightmares in Red, White an Blue. The company plans to release the documentary in additional film festivals, specialty theaters and college venues starting in July, prior to a DVD release on September 28.

Definitely looking forward to checking it out!

The Evil Queen and me at NHC 2010

I know it's a little late and a con or two ago, but cool chica The Evil Queen had mentioned she had a couple of cool pics of the two of us. Being the slacker that I am, I'm just getting around to checking it out.

She and hubby flew all the way in from Hawaii, and it was great to meet them. They were so cool and great people - thanks again for the laughs and hope to see ya again sometime!

P.S. Yes, Evil Queen, I slouched a wee bit to fit us both in the pic - LOL - but my joke about not being able to pick you up was a comment on my muscles (or lack thereof) and not your weight!!!

The Vampire Bat (201?)

News is that not only is AIP rising from the grave to work on three new flicks, but one of them will include a redo-willy of the 1933 classic flick The Vampire Bat.

I take issue with the story's characterization of the film as "obscure" but then again maybe it's just because I dig all the older stuff. Anyway, I do appreciate the fact that the studio has commented that the remake "will retain all of the spirit and story of the original with key updates in designs and dialogue, but will remain a steadfast homage for fans of classic horror movies."

Growl (2011)

A-wooooooooooooooooo! Calling all lycanthrope fans! Here’s news of a new werewolf flick coming our way.

Starring Katee Sachhoff, the story revolves around “a traveling underground fight club called 'The Brawlers' who arrive at a derelict ghost town tucked away in the Colorado Rockies. They meet the town's only residents, the Maxilla family, who want to buy onto the fight card. But the Maxilla family's true intentions for the Brawler crew is soon revealed in teeth and claws. Some will be hunted, some will be feed, and some will become part of the family whether they like it or not.”

Kiefer Sutherland is in talks to join the cast as well.

I just caught this news from our friends at DC and cracked up, so I knew I had to share.

Eben McGarr (House of the Wolf Man, Sick Girl) is working on a holiday themed slasher flick. No, not Halloween....nope, not Christmas, and well, Eli Roth has Thanksgiving going so.......

It's the Festival of Lights' turn! Yup, that's right - Hanukkah is coming, and DC has it listed as a "horror comedy."

Here's the official synopsis:

"Obediah Lazarus is the son of Judah Lazarus, the original Hannukiller. In 1983 Judah terrorized NY for seven nights and was preparing to sacrifice his eight-year-old son, Obediah, on the eighth night. Judah was convinced it was God’s will, like Abraham and Isaac, to sacrifice his only son to God. Luckily for Obediah, police tracked Judah down and stopped the sacrifice, but Judah was gunned down in the process. Warped by hatred with no guidance, Obediah Lazarus becomes a religious extremist, intolerant of non-Jews, "bad Jews", and those he perceives to be enemies of the Jewish faith. He is about to unleash eight nights of horror.

A group of Jewish teens are getting ready to party for the holidays but are in for a Festival of Frights. With the help of a wise rabbi, they deduce that the murder victims have violated Judaic law and that their only chance at survival is to embrace their faith."

Boom! Studios is releasing a new Drac comic this Summer titled Dracula:The Company of Monsters. Coming from Kurt Busiek, Daryl Gregory and Scott Godlewski, the series’ premise is as follows:

DRACULA: THE COMPANY OF MONSTERS tells the story of a powerful, predatory corporation that acquires a valuable asset…Dracula! They think they own him, but no one can own the Son of the Dragon. There's a monster in their midst that puts Hannibal Lecter to shame--and he plans to gain his freedom in blood. It's bloodsuckers vs. bloodsucker, as Busiek brings an incredibly modern spin to the Dracula mythos.
